Quando stavano registrando We are the world una voce cantò: Day oh. E tutti gli altri 44 artisti, impegnati nella registrazione, risposero: Daylight come and me wan' go home. Harry Belafonte cominciò a ridere. Perfino Bob Dylan, che per tutta la session era rimasto quasi silente, si lasciò andare a un sorriso.

Al Jarreu continuò a cantare. Lionel Richie si esaltò. Ray Charles cominciò a saltare di gioia. Stevie Wonder improvvisò una frase: “If you drink too much, I’ll have to say/ You’re gonna have to be driven home by me or Ray/ Day-o. Day-ay-ay-ay-o”. (Se bevi troppo, ti dovrò dire/ che sarai riportato a casa da me e da Ray). Belafonte, quasi con timidezza, partecipò a quel formidabile coro, un tributo a un suo antico e indelebile successo. Allora Harry aveva 58 anni.

A marzo scorso ne ha compiuti 96 e oggi se ne è andato, lasciando una scia lunghissima di ricordi, prima fra tutte quella canzone pescata dal repertorio tradizionale giamaicano per la quale Tony Scott, il direttore d’orchestra e clarinettista, inventò quel grido contagioso che introduce Banana boat: Day oh”. Il video di quel break durante la session di We are the world è il più grande omaggio  che si può immaginare alla canzone e a Belafonte.
