Dagospia, the Italian gossip website, has been at the forefront of the campaign to unmask Ferrante as Raja, 63, whose German-born mother fled the Holocaust.

Commenting after her failure to win the Man Booker International Prize for the fourth novel in the Neapolitan series, The Story of the Lost Child, and the flurry of excitement in Britain over her anonymity, the site wrote: “The fake mystery of Elena Ferrante conquers the UK. It’s a shame that even the rocks know she is Anita Raja.”

The site also accused the writer of hypocrisy, noting that she insisted on clinging to her anonymity to avoid the media glare, while giving interviews as her books became bestsellers.

In un altro articolo, sempre sul ''Times'' si ricordano le frasi di Elena Ferrante (ancora anonima) su Domenico Starnone, più volte sospettato di essere dietro al nom de plume. Ferrante, con la ''tongue in cheek'', come direbbero gli inglesi, si dice ''dispiaciuta che Starnone debba subire la pressione della stampa. Mi sento in colpa. Ma ho grande stima di lui e sono sicura che capisce le mie motivazioni''.

(Amusingly, Starnone has been accused of being Ferrante in the past. In one email exchange, an interviewer put it to Ferrante that, “Starnone has given interviews saying that he is very tired of everyone asking if he’s you. What would you say to him?” Ferrante’s reply is droll: “That he’s right and I feel guilty. But I hold him in great esteem and I’m certain that he understands my motivations.”)
